Guide to Cala Bona on the Balearic Island of Mallorca
The holiday destination of Cala Bona and its close neighbour Cala Millor are based on the eastern coast of the Baleric island of Majorca. These resorts are separated by a 5 minute taxi trip or 20 minutes walk for the more energetic. Most holiday destinations in Majorca are biased towards either British or German tourists. Cala Bona itself is definitely a British favourite while Cala Millor is a little different as a mixed holiday town in that both English and German tourists flock to in force. Cala Bona in Majorca is certainly the quieter of the two resorts making it ideal for young families. In Cala Bona the majority of the evening entertainment takes part in local hotels. Cala Bona is probably not for anyone wanting to party the night away but Cala Millor offers a more active night life and as already mentioned is only a 5 minute taxi trip or 20 minutes walk away.
Cala Bona has developed from a tiny traditional fishing village into an important holiday resort on Majorca’s less developed east coast. The original village of Cala Bona is very much in evidence as the resort features a number of the original narrow streets. The harbour is an interesting part of the resort of Cala Bona. The harbour has been revamped recently and now offers a number of harbourside cafes, bars and eateries. A number of Cala Bona tourist excursions are available at the harbour.
Cala Bona includes a series of small sandy beaches enclosed by man made rocky breakwaters forming calm, sheltered waters ideal for swimming and paddling in relative safety. In recent years the lagoons seem to have encouraged for seaweed to build up both in the water and on the beach. The local council have been actively managing this problem by regular removal of the seaweed to circumvent a build up. Cala Bona’s beaches are now generally much improved as a result of the maintenance program.
Coach transfers from Palma de Mallorca airport often takes about 2 hours to either Cala Bona or Cala Millor. Car hire from Cala Bona or from Palma Airport is usually quite cheap in comparison with other Mediterranean locations. If you plan to rent a car from the airport think about getting a decent map or guide to Majorca before departing.
