Locating Good Bass Fishing Along Rivers
Don’t ever get it in your head that if you aren’t near a lake, that you don’t have a chance to catch big bass. But if you have a backwater or river system close by, you do have a chance, a very good chance for bass. These areas are usually flooded basins, and hold lots of submerged brush, rocks and weeds that are ideal for bass. But watch out though, the bass are pretty sensitive to water levels, and if they suspect that the backwater area is losing water, they will retreat in a hurry.
So let’s take a look at how river bass fishing can produce the kind of bass that you want. To begin with, take thought of the season your fishing. During the spawning season, the bass will be in the shallow parts of the backwaters. Deep cover provides the environment bass like to build their nests in, and they will hunt for food at the edge of the cover area. When you are casting, try to get your lure as close to the edge of a set of lilly pads or other visible cover, and work through and near the edges as long as possible, to entice the fish to strike.
Remember, if the water begins to recede, so will the fish. Look for them in the cuts between lakes, and perhaps deep holes in the river. That’s when you need to pull out your crankbaits and worms to get down a little deeper where the bass will be hanging out. Also, look for currents in these areas, and work the break of the current to locate some good fishing.
